Teenage part-time job: Earn money by following these rules.

The Labor Standards Act stipulates that adolescents are those aged 15 to 18 years. When employing adolescents, employers must comply with the labor standards regulations related to adolescents, such as working hours. Employers must prevent any problems that may arise when employing adolescents and ensure that adolescents can protect their rights, which may not be properly protected. Let's take a look at the contents of the Labor Standards Act that must be followed when hiring non-adult adolescents.

  1. Those under the age of 15 cannot be employed as workers. However, if you receive a work permit, people between the ages of 13 and 15 can also work. You can download a work permit here. To obtain a work permit, you must obtain the consent of the employer, the school principal, and your parents.

  2. You cannot work at a prohibited workplace. There are places where adolescents can enter, but employment is prohibited. Therefore, if an adolescent mistakenly thinks that they can work in such a place and starts working, it can be a problem. The following are the places where employment is prohibited:

Game providers, complex distribution game providers, gambling businesses, adult entertainment establishments (including providing alcohol, singing, dancing, etc.), video viewing rooms, restricted rating video theaters, complex video content providers, singing practice rooms, adult dancing academies, adult dancing studios, voice and video chat rooms, sexual activity-related businesses (kiss rooms, massages, adult PC rooms, love motels, doll experience rooms, etc.), sex toy retailers, online horse racing tracks (including bicycle racing and motor boat racing), workplaces where employment of adolescents is prohibited, adolescent game providers, internet computer game facilities, accommodation businesses, bathhouses, usage businesses, delivery in snack bars, preparation and sale of alcohol in general restaurants, harmful chemical substance businesses, comic book rooms, handling of harmful media for adolescents and harmful drugs for adolescents, employment of adolescents in harmful labor activities due to businesses targeting adults, etc.

You can check the detailed information about the harmful workplaces for adolescents announced by the Minister of Gender Equality and Family here.

  3. You must prepare a labor contract. A labor contract is a document that must be prepared for all labor relations where you receive money and provide work. You can check the information related to preparing a labor contract here.

  4. The minimum wage is the same as for adults. You cannot pay lower wages than the minimum wage just because someone is younger. Joining the four major insurance schemes is also mandatory. Break time must also be guaranteed. You can check the details here.

  5. You must comply with the prescribed working hours. The working hours for adolescents are 7 hours per day and 35 hours per week. Note that the working hours for adults are 8 hours per day and 40 hours per week. Adolescents can work an additional 5 hours per week with their consent. Adolescents cannot work at night or on holidays. However, if the adolescent worker agrees, they can work. Also, you must apply in advance to the relevant employment and labor office. You can apply online here.
